There’s something quietly terrifying about change.

Whether it’s changing careers, getting healthy, ending a toxic relationship, or finally going after that dream you’ve been putting off for years—the first step always feels like the hardest.

Why? Because deep down, we’re waiting for a sign. For motivation to hit. For fear to disappear. For confidence to arrive, neatly packaged and labelled “Ready Now.”

But here’s the truth I’ve learned—as a coach, and as someone who is constantly working my own growth:

The first step toward change is deciding to move… even before you feel ready.

Change doesn’t start with a plan, it starts with a decision.

Most people think they need clarity before they can begin. But it’s often the other way around.

When you decide to take action, any action, clarity begins to show up. You don’t need a five-year plan. You don’t need to know exactly how it all works out. You just need to ask yourself one question:

“What’s one small thing I can do today to move closer to the life I want?”

That’s it. One baby step.

What is the baby step?

Maybe it’s:

Texting someone for support

Signing up for a class that intimidates you

De-cluttering your space to create mental clarity

Saying “no” for the first time in a long time

Admitting what you really want, even if it scares you

Baby steps. But bold ones.

Fear isn’t a reason to stop, its shows you you’re growing!

If you’re scared, good. That means you’re right at the edge of your comfort zone—the place where growth begins.

It’s normal to feel shaky when you’re stepping into something new. You’re shedding old habits, stories, and beliefs. You’re disrupting your “autopilot.” Of course it feels weird.

But fear doesn’t mean “don’t.” It often means “this matters.”

No step is too small—Just make a step.

Making consistent choices.

We tend to dismiss small actions because we’re obsessed with big results. But real change is a series of consistent, courageous choices.

You don’t have to transform your whole life overnight. You just need to prove to yourself, with action, that you’re not staying stuck anymore.

And from there, momentum builds.

On a personal note……

“You’re not lazy. You’re not lost. You’re just standing in front of your next chapter and that first step is all it takes to turn the page. So, take it. However imperfect, awkward, or messy it feels. Start. Begin. Move.

You don’t have to feel ready.

You just have to be willing.

If you are still stuck.

If you still feel stuck (and that is VERY normal) please do drop me a line, we can have a chat and I can talk to you about how coaching can help unstick you and then you WILL be able to take that baby step and make that change!

It’s by no coincidence that I am writing this post at a time of year where we can be pushed and pulled by so many different things. As we head towards the end of the year, we are already feeling a little weary and then to add another layer of weariness, the social diary starts to get a little too busy.

Saying no.

Most of us find it really quite hard to say no. We like to be nice; we like to please people and we also worry that if we turn things down, we won’t get asked again. All of these feelings are totally understandable but not necessarily a good reason to say YES.

So, how do we learn to say no?

Firstly, I would recommend you putting yourself in a position where you have time to think about the invite. This isn’t always possible but IF, you receive a text with an invite, you do not have to reply straight away, you can tell them you will need to check your diary or and with your partner before you get back to them. Give yourself space to think about whether this is something you actually want/can manage to do.

Giving yourself time to say no.

The “no” response: “Thank you so much for thinking of me but unfortunately I can’t make it this time.”

If you are put on the spot, the same applies really – “thank you for the invite, that sounds great, but I do need to check with X or look on the family calendar at home, can I get back to you?”

Why are you saying no?

When you have created that space for yourself, ask yourself whether you are saying yes because it’s something you’d really like to do OR because you are worried about hurting someone’s feelings. Really dig deep and decide if saying yes will serve you well and not put you under added pressure.

What could I be saying yes to?

I really like the coaching question – “By saying no to this, what am I saying yes to?”

So by saying no to an invite to a dinner or drinks party, you could be saying yes to a chilled night at home, a long bath and an early night?

Saying no to a friend’s shopping trip one weekend, you could be saying yes to getting on top of all the jobs on your to do list that have been niggling away at you?

You need to practice saying no.

Learning to say no is like anything, it can feel very uncomfortable at first but if you practice it, it becomes easier, something that can make a big difference to your life and you find out that the world doesn’t cave in if you don’t always say yes!

Life coaching is a tool that is often used to help support those who wish to make changes in their lives. Change can be scary; you know you need to do it but you’re not sure how.

Sometimes there are times in our lives where we know we need to do something different; we need to shake things up a bit, but we don’t know where or how to start.

I talk with many clients about all aspects of change and how we can put together a plan to facilitate it in the most productive (and least scary) way.

Areas of change.

These obviously vary from person to person, but the most common areas around change that come up with my clients are:

Appearance – Feeling like you need a change? Maybe something has happened to you recently and you want a different look or perhaps you’ve outgrown your current style and want a makeover?

Job – You might not have been happy for a while and feel like life is too short to remain somewhere where you’re no longer happy? Maybe it’s larger than that and you’re desperate to do something completely different?

Location – The children have flown the nest; you might have split up from a partner and want a change of house/home? Or perhaps you just fancy living somewhere else?

Relationship – You’re no longer in one or you’re looking for a new relationship and feel the time is now. Maybe you want to get out of the relationship you’re in and you’re ready for change?

All of these things can be major life changing events and – on the face of it – feel very scary but with the right help and support, change can be SO exciting.

Ask yourself these questions –

If I were to make this change, how could my life look?

If I make no changes, how will my life look?

What is the scariest factor in making this change?

By making this change, how will I benefit and what will be the positive impact on those around me?

What would be the most exciting part of making this change?

Change can be unpopular.

Change isn’t always embraced by those in our circles since it can alter the dynamics of our interactions. Nevertheless, that shouldn’t deter us. If you’re contemplating a significant shift in your life, there’s a valid reason behind it. It suggests an imbalance in your current situation, and you have every right to take steps to rectify that.

Find an objective sounding board.

This is where I step in. Life coaching provides you with an objective ally, someone who will cheer you on and offer support as you navigate potentially challenging decisions without passing judgment.

Go for it!

Why wouldn’t you? If you’re creating change for a positive impact on your life, you’re not purposefully out to hurt others – why would you not try something different? Maybe this change will be the making of you but you won’t know until you try!
