There is something I hear a lot as a coach and usually within the first few minutes of a conversation.

“I know this probably sounds silly…”

Or:

“I’m not sure this is really a big enough thing to talk about…”

And every time, I find it interesting because somewhere along the way, lots of us seem to have created an invisible scale for whether something is “serious enough” to need support.

A major life event – Allowed.

Complete crisis – Allowed.

Everything falling apart – Definitely allowed!

It’s the everyday stuff that can derail you.

The things that affect our everyday lives, well we often tell ourselves we should just be able to deal with those.

Feeling overwhelmed, going round in circles about a decision, struggling with a change or/ and trying to balance work, family and everything else. Knowing something isn’t quite working but not knowing how to fix it.

Those things count too.

You don’t have to wait until something becomes a crisis before you do something about it. In fact, it’s usually much easier when you don’t.

We understand this in so many other areas of life.

We service the car before it breaks down.

We ask an expert when we need financial or legal advice.

We get someone to help when we don’t know how to fix something in the house.

Yet when it comes to us, we often decide we should magically have all the answers.

An objective view can make all the difference.

I get it but life changes and circumstances change. What worked for you five years ago might not work now and that means you might need to look at things differently and sometimes having someone outside the situation can make all the difference.

Someone who isn’t emotionally involved. Someone who can ask different questions. Someone who can help you see the wood for the trees.

Coaching isn’t just for the big life-changing moments, it’s for real life. The everyday challenges, the decisions and the transitions. The times when you find yourself thinking:

“Something needs to change, but I don’t know where to start.”

Life shouldn’t need to be at crisis point to ask for support.

You don’t need to arrive with a crisis; you don’t even need to arrive with all the answers -that’s the whole point. We work it out together and create a realistic plan to support you in moving forward.

If something has been sitting in the back of your mind for a while and you keep telling yourself you “should” be able to sort it, maybe this is your reminder that you don’t have to do it alone.

A free 20-minute chat is simply a chance to talk through what’s going on and see whether coaching might help.

Sometimes the most useful conversations happen before everything feels too much because support isn’t just for a crisis, it’s for real life too.

I think life coaching is one of those things lots of people have heard of, but not everyone really knows what it means which is understandable.

What does a life coach do?

The phrase “life coach” can create all sorts of different ideas – someone telling you how to live your life. Someone giving you motivational quotes, maybe someone encouraging you to quit your job, move abroad and start a completely different life.

And while I can’t speak for every coach, I can tell you that’s not what happens when you work with me.

I’m not here to tell you what to do.

Firstly, I don’t tell people what to do, which is probably a good thing because most people don’t need another person giving them instructions, we already have enough of those. We already have enough of the endless lists & things to juggle –

The work deadlines, managing family expectations. Our fife admin and the endless list of things we feel we “should” be doing.

It’s all about space to talk, to discuss & find solutions.

Coaching is different.

It gives you space to stop, talk things through and understand what is actually going on because often the thing someone comes to coaching with isn’t the whole story.

“I need to get more organised” might actually be “I have too much on my plate.”

“I need better time management” might actually be “I’m trying to fit an unrealistic amount into my week.”

“I need to make a decision” might actually be “I’ve been going round in circles because I’m trying to find the perfect answer.”

My job is to help untangle it.

So how do we do it?

We look at what’s working, what isn’t working and what practical changes would make the biggest difference. Sometimes that’s a big decision, sometimes it’s a small adjustment and sometimes it’s simply having someone outside the situation ask the right questions because when you’re in the middle of everything, it can be really hard to see clearly.

I often describe it as trying to read the label when you’re inside the jar – you’re too close to the situation.

Coaching gives you the chance to step outside it for a while.

You will have a practical plan.

And because I am The Practical Life Coach, we don’t just talk, we create realistic steps, things you can actually use in your actual life. Not the imaginary version of your life where nothing unexpected happens, nobody interrupts you and you have endless amounts of time and energy (if anyone finds that version, please let me know.)

This is coaching for REAL life.

Real life is messier than that. Which is exactly why coaching needs to work in real life.

So, if you’ve ever wondered what actually happens in a coaching session, the answer is probably less mysterious than you imagined.

We talk.

We untangle.

We make a plan.

And you leave knowing what the next step looks like.

Then, because I love a list and absolutely believe in making things practical, I send you a follow-up email with everything we discussed and your agreed next steps.

Some clients have been known to describe this as my “slightly bossy but helpful” email.

Personally, I prefer to call it accountability.

I was recently told by someone reading one of my posts that Barney, my dog and regular office companion, is clearly the CEO of my business which was news to me.

I thought I was in charge but apparently not. Although, to be fair, he does attend a lot of meetings, has very strong opinions about when breaks should happen and takes his responsibility for making sure I leave my desk very seriously (his diary management skills need some work though.)

So, while Barney continues in his self-appointed senior management role, I thought this might be a good time to properly introduce (or reintroduce) myself for those who may be new here.

The Practical Life Coach.

I’m Kate, The Practical Life Coach and the word “practical” is there for a reason.

When people hear “life coach”, I think they sometimes imagine big dramatic life changes –

Quitting jobs.
Moving countries.
Finding your one true purpose.
Completely reinventing yourself.

Who are my clients?

And while big changes do sometimes happen, that isn’t what most of my work looks like. Most of my work is with real people navigating real life.

It’s the busy professional who feels like they’re constantly juggling, the person facing a change they weren’t expecting. The parent trying to balance everyone else’s needs along with their own or the person who looks like they have everything together but privately feels completely overwhelmed.

It’s the person who says, “I know I need to do something differently, I just don’t know where to start” and that’s where practical coaching comes in.

How do I help?

My job isn’t to tell you what your life should look like. It’s to help you understand what is happening now, what needs to change and what realistic steps will actually help.

I like a plan.

I like a list.

I like breaking big, messy situations down into manageable pieces.

Because in nearly 20 years of coaching, one thing has become very clear, most people don’t need someone to tell them to try harder because they’re already trying really hard.

They need space to think. They need someone outside the situation and they need practical steps that fit the life they actually have.

And that’s what I do.

Working with real people living real lives.

No magic wand or overnight transformations. No pretending life will suddenly become perfect if you wake up at 5am and follow a 27-step morning routine.

Just honest conversations, practical tools and support to make things feel more manageable and occasionally, a reminder from Barney that taking a break and going outside is also important (although I’m still not officially confirming his promotion to CEO, well not yet anyway!)

If any of this sounds familiar and you feel like you could do with someone helping you untangle things, that’s exactly what I’m here for.

How can you work with me?

Sometimes you don’t need a completely new life, you just need some time, space and support to work out what would make the life you already have feel a little easier.

If you’d like to find out more about working with me, you can book a free 20-minute chat and we can talk through what support might be useful.

(Barney’s attendance cannot be guaranteed unless you can promise snacks.)

Planning a holiday often starts with excitement.

Looking at destinations, checking dates, imagining the break you’re ready for after a busy start to the year but somewhere between booking accommodation, organising travel, coordinating family schedules and thinking about budgets, holiday planning can begin to feel surprisingly stressful.

The irony of course, is that the thing meant to help us rest can sometimes become another project to manage.

A good holiday

A good holiday rarely depends on perfect planning. More often, it comes down to a few simple decisions made early on, ones that protect your time, energy and expectations.

Here are three things worth keeping in mind as summer plans begin to take shape.

3 things to bear in mind.

1. You don’t have to do everything

It’s tempting to try to make a holiday count.

Seeing all the sights, booking activities, making every day memorable especially if time away feels precious, but constantly moving from one plan to the next can leave everyone feeling tired rather than refreshed.

Leave space for slower days:

mornings without alarms

unplanned afternoons

time to wander rather than schedule

Often, the moments people remember most aren’t the organised ones, they’re the relaxed ones.

2. Plan for Real Life, Not Ideal Life

When planning, we often imagine our most energetic, organised selves.

Reality usually includes:

tired travel days

changing weather

different moods

unexpected delays

Building flexibility into plans makes holidays far more enjoyable. Choose accommodation, travel times and activities that allow room for adjustment rather than perfection.

A holiday that works with real life feels far calmer than one that tries to control every detail.

3. Decide what matters most

Every holiday has a different purpose.

Rest.
Adventure.
Family time.
Exploration.
A change of scenery.

Before finalising plans, ask yourself what you most want to come home feeling.

Relaxed?
Reconnected?
Refreshed?

When you’re clear on the priority, decisions become easier and expectations more realistic.

A gentle reminder……..

Holidays don’t need to look impressive to be enjoyable.

Simple trips, familiar places or slower breaks often provide exactly what people need after busy months. The aim isn’t to create the perfect experience, but to return feeling that the time genuinely supported you.

As you begin planning for summer, remember that the best holidays aren’t usually the busiest or most carefully packed. They’re the ones that leave enough space for rest, spontaneity and enjoyment along the way. A little thoughtful planning now can make the whole experience feel lighter before you even leave home.

Small, practical changes can make everyday life feel lighter.

If you’ve found yourself feeling anxious, helpless, distracted or quietly overwhelmed by what’s going on in the news lately, you’re not weak or overreacting. You’re human.

And no, this isn’t about pretending it’s not happening or sticking your head in the sand, being informed matters.

Caring matters, but so does your mental health.

The real challenge is finding a way to stay engaged without carrying the full emotional weight of the world on your shoulders every single day.

Why constant news exposure takes it’s toll.

Our brains aren’t designed to process a 24-hour stream of crisis.

When we’re repeatedly exposed to distressing news, especially stories we have little control over, our nervous system can slip into a near-constant state of alert. That can show up as:

Feeling on edge or snappy for no obvious reason

Difficulty concentrating or sleeping

A sense of helplessness or dread

Emotional exhaustion, even when you haven’t “done” very much

None of this means you don’t care. Often, it means you care a lot.

So, let’s talk about what you can do, practically to protect your headspace while still staying grounded in reality.

Limit exposure.

This isn’t about avoiding the news. It’s about being intentional with how and when you consume it.

A few gentle but effective boundaries to consider:

Choose when you check the news – Instead of dipping in constantly, pick one or two specific times of day to catch up.

For example:

A morning check-in

Or a short update in the early evening

Outside of that, give yourself permission to step away.

Be selective about where you get your information – endless scrolling is rarely informative, it’s emotionally draining.

Consider:

One trusted news source

A daily news email rather than social media

Turning off push notifications for breaking news

You’re not missing out, you’re reducing noise.

Notice when “staying informed” tips into doom scrolling.

A simple question to ask yourself:

“Is this helping me understand, or just fuelling my anxiety?”

If it’s the latter, that’s your cue to pause.

Shifting focus to what you CAN influence.

When the world feels out of control, grounding yourself in what is within your reach can be incredibly stabilising.

This isn’t about minimising big issues it’s about anchoring yourself.

Come back to your immediate world

Ask yourself:

What’s needed of me today?

Who or what is right in front of me?

Your home, your work, your relationships, your health -these things matter too.

Take small, values-led actions.

If something in the news really matters to you, consider one manageable way to respond:

Donating, if that’s within your means

Writing to an MP

Supporting a local organisation

Having thoughtful conversations rather than heated debates

One small action is enough.

Create pockets of normality.

Routine can be grounding when everything feels uncertain:

A walk you take most days

A familiar meal

A regular catch-up with someone who feels safe

These aren’t distractions, they’re stabilisers.

Give yourself permission to step back.

This is the part many people struggle with.

Stepping away from the news doesn’t mean you don’t care, It means you’re recognising your limits.

You’re allowed to say:

“This is too much for me today.”

“I need a breather.”

“I can’t hold this and everything else right now.”

Caring about the world and caring for yourself are not opposing ideas, they go hand in hand.

A regulated, rested, supported person is far more able to engage thoughtfully than someone running on empty.

My final thought……

You are not responsible for fixing everything.

You are responsible for looking after your own mental health, energy and capacity especially when life already feels full on.

Stay informed. Stay compassionate.
But also stay grounded, steady and kind to yourself.

Sometimes the most practical thing you can do is close the app, take a breath and come back to what you can influence one small step at a time.

January has a reputation for being a month of fresh starts, bold intentions and big declarations. Everywhere you look, there’s a message telling you this is the moment to fix what’s broken, improve what isn’t good enough, and emerge as a new version of yourself.

For many people, that message doesn’t inspire — it overwhelms.

You’re expecting too much from yourself.

If you’re entering the new year feeling tired, unmotivated, or emotionally flat, you’re not on your own. December often demands more than we acknowledge and expecting instant energy and clarity in January ignores the reality of how life actually works.

You don’t need to reinvent yourself to move forward.
You don’t need a dramatic reset or a personal overhaul.

What you do need is permission to begin gently.

It’s time to take stock.

A gentler start to the year is about slowing down enough to notice where you are right now. Not where you think you should be. Not where you were hoping to be by now. Just here, in your real, lived experience.

That might mean taking stock of what feels heavy after the end of last year. It might mean acknowledging what already feels stretched or unsustainable. It might also mean recognising what’s working quietly in the background and giving yourself credit for that.

Practical reflection.

This kind of reflection isn’t indulgent. It’s practical, because when you start from honesty rather than expectation, the decisions you make are more grounded and more likely to last.

A gentle beginning doesn’t mean doing nothing. It means doing the right things at the right pace. It means allowing January to be a month of settling, listening, and recalibrating rather than pushing.

You’re not behind.
You’re allowed to start the year in a way that supports you, not drains you.

How I can help.

Life coaching can support you. I can work with you to create a realistic action plan that will move you forward with intention but fitting into your everyday life in a realistic and manageable way.

Contact me today to arrange a free 30 minute chat to see if we could work together in a sustainable and supportive way.

Wishing you a happy and peaceful New Year.

December can be all go-go-go. The last week can also be a pause, a chance to take a breath before the year ends. Instead of rushing into New Year’s resolutions or piling on more pressure, towards the end of this month, think of it as an opportunity to reset gently.

An end of year reset isn’t about reinventing yourself. It’s about closing the year a little calmer, creating space for joy and carrying only what feels supportive into the months ahead.

Here are 4 simple steps to help you end the year with ease:

1. Reflect, Don’t Rewrite

It’s easy to focus on what didn’t get done, but now is a good time to look back on what did go well. What small wins are you proud of? What moments of joy stood out? Reflection builds confidence and reminds you that progress doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful.

2. Clear the Decks

Choose just one small area to declutter before January – your desk, your wardrobe or even your fridge. A single reset can make you feel lighter and more prepared to step into the new year without carrying old clutter with you.

3. Tiny Joys List

Write down three little things that make you smile – a favourite song, a hot chocolate, a walk in the fresh air. Then, make space for them daily. These tiny joys act as reminders that calm and happiness are built from small, consistent choices.

4. Plan Lightly

Instead of overloading yourself with New Year’s resolutions, choose just one or two things you’d like to carry forward into the year ahead. Make them intentions rather than resolutions. Keep it simple, gentle and realistic. This way, you step into January with clarity not pressure.

Setting the tone for the year ahead.

Your end of year reset doesn’t need to be dramatic. It’s not about doing more, it’s about creating breathing space, celebrating what matters and choosing to end the year with calm and kindness. Ease now sets the tone for ease later.

Take a moment to acknowledge how far you’ve come.Even if it hasn’t always felt easy, you’ve taken steps however small, to ease overwhelm and create more space for yourself. That matters, and it’s worth celebrating.

Let’s work together.

If you’d like to carry this momentum into the New Year and keep building on the positive changes you’ve started, I’d love to have a chat with you about how we can make that happen together. Book a free call with me to see how we can dance into 2026 rather than wade through treacle!

Refection Prompt:

What’s one small thing I’d like to leave behind this year, and one small thing I’d love to carry with me into the next?

As the nights draw in and the shops start to sneak out the Christmas decorations earlier and earlier, it’s easy to feel that familiar mix of excitement and financial pressure. Gifts, food, family outings, social plans, the costs creep up quickly, and December can soon feel more stressful than joyful.

Small practical shifts.

But here’s the good news: you don’t have to cut out all the fun to stay on top of your budget. By making a few small, practical shifts now, you can ease the pressure and make December feel lighter, calmer, and still a month to look forward to!

Budgeting can feel like it sucks the joy out of everything BUT the truth of the matter is, it’s overspending that is the joy killer so by using some of my practical tips below, you can start saving a little to take the pressure off.

Here are 4 simple ways to start saving before Christmas:

1. The List Reset

Before you get swept into the “buy for everyone” mentality, take a step back and write a fresh gift list. Who do you really want to buy for? Cut out the “obligatory extras” (the office acquaintance, the distant cousin’s neighbour’s child) and focus on the people who matter most.
A shorter list means less money spent and more thought put into each gift.

2. Joyful Swaps

Not every gift has to come from the shops. Suggest a Secret Santa for groups of friends or extended family where everyone buys just one thoughtful present. Or think outside the box with homemade bakes, framed photos, or a shared experience like a festive walk or film night. BUT only if these are doable and not energy zappers!
These swaps save money and often feel more meaningful.

3. Budget Pots

Instead of leaving all the costs until December, start setting aside a little each week now. It doesn’t need to be big, £10–£20 a week adds up quickly. Whether it’s in a cash jar on the kitchen shelf or a separate savings account, seeing it build gives you peace of mind.
By Christmas, you’ll have a ready-made pot for gifts, food, or fun without raiding your main budget.

4. Food Smart

Christmas food shopping is notorious for blowing budgets. Get ahead by picking up a few extras each week: frozen nibbles, tins, or snacks with a long shelf life. By spreading the cost now, you’ll avoid the last-minute panic and the big December bill.
Stocking up gradually means you can still enjoy the festive spread without the financial sting.

My final thought.

Saving before Christmas doesn’t mean saying no to joy, it means being intentional, so you can say yes to what really matters. With a little planning now, you can head into December feeling calmer, lighter, and ready to enjoy the season, rather than dread the spending.

Here’s a truth we don’t talk about enough:
You can be surrounded by people and still feel unsupported.
You can ask for help and still feel misunderstood.
And sometimes, you can do all the “right” things and still feel stuck—because you’re asking the wrong people for the right kind of support.

Not everyone is meant to support you in every way.

Different people bring different strengths.
Some are great listeners.
Some are solution focused.
Some are emotional anchors, while others are the cheerleaders you didn’t know you needed.

But here’s where it gets tricky:
When we’re in a vulnerable place, we often expect the wrong person to give us the right thing.

And that mismatch?
It hurts.

It’s not that they don’t care.
It’s that they don’t know how and maybe they were never meant to.

The power of asking strategically, not just emotionally.

When you’re drowning, it makes sense to reach for whoever’s closest.
But when it comes to growth, healing, and clarity, we need to get intentional about who we lean on.

Ask yourself:

Who in my life actually gets this part of my journey?

Who can hold space without judgment?

Who challenges me with love, not criticism?

Who supports my evolution, not just my comfort zone?

When you get clear on what kind of support you need—emotional, practical, spiritual, creative, accountability-based, you’ll know who to ask (and who to give grace to when they can’t show up in that way).

Not all advice is equal.

Someone can love you and still give you advice based on their fear, their worldview, or their limits.

Be mindful of who you let influence your decisions.
Sometimes, the most well-meaning people are offering support that’s rooted in keeping you safe, not helping you grow.

Redefining what support looks like.

Support isn’t always a pep talk or a fix-it plan.

Sometimes, it’s:

Someone texting, “I’m thinking of you.”

A coach or therapist helping you untangle your thoughts.

A friend sitting beside you, not saying a word.

A community that gets it, even if they’ve never met you in person.

Saying “no” to someone draining so you can say “yes” to yourself.

Support isn’t about quantity.
It’s about quality.
It’s about fit.

Asking the right people doesn’t make you picky or high maintenance.
It makes you self-aware. It makes you wise.

Confidence can feel like a mystery sometimes.

We think it’s something we’re either born with or that magically appears after a big success. But confidence isn’t just for public speakers, CEOs, or people with perfect morning routines.

Confidence is built bit by bit, moment by moment.
And it doesn’t require a life overhaul. Sometimes, all it takes is one small, intentional task to remind yourself:

“I’m capable. I’ve got this.”

A confidence boost.

So today, I want to share one simple thing you can do to give your confidence a quick and genuine boost:

Do One Thing You’ve Been Avoiding

That’s it.

Pick one tiny task you’ve been putting off—and do it.

Reply to that email you’ve been ignoring

Fold the laundry sitting in the corner

Make that appointment

Update your CV

Clean out one drawer

Cancel the subscription you keep forgetting about

It doesn’t have to be dramatic. It just needs to be something that’s been lingering on your mental to-do list for too long.

Why this works.

Avoidance is sneaky. Every time we delay or ignore something, our mind quietly records it as unfinished business. It weighs on us, even if we don’t realise it.

The more those little tasks pile up, the more powerless we start to feel.

But when you finally face just one of them?
You shift the story.

You go from:

“Ugh, I’m always behind…”
to
“Great, I did that!”

And that shift, however small is a confidence builder.

Momentum builds confidence.

Think of confidence like a muscle. You don’t wake up with six-pack abs. You build strength by showing up, doing reps, and proving to yourself that you can be consistent.

Doing one avoided task is like your first rep. It creates momentum.

And momentum says:

“I can trust myself to take action.”

“I keep my promises—even the small ones.”

“I don’t need to wait until I feel confident to act.”

You act, and the confidence follows.

Try this today:

Take 60 seconds.

Write down 3 small tasks you’ve been avoiding (even the silly ones).

Choose one. Do it within the next 15 minutes. No perfection, just completion.

Then pause, breathe, and notice how you feel. Even if it’s subtle, there will be a shift.

That’s the spark. That’s self-trust coming back online.

Final thoughts.

Confidence Isn’t Loud, It’s Quiet Self-Trust

You don’t need to climb a mountain or give a TED Talk to feel confident.
Sometimes, all it takes is a five-minute task you’ve been avoiding for five weeks.

And when you realise you’re capable of consistence, even in a small way,
you start believing in what else is possible.

Want more bite-sized ways to build real confidence?
Let’s chat. I help people build their confidence one small step at a time. Drop me a line and we can organise a free 30-minute taster session to see how I could help you.
