By the time December rolls around, it’s easy to feel like everything happens at once -spending, shopping, cleaning, prepping, and trying to keep up with the pace. But what if you could make a few smart swaps now, in October, that free up time, money, and energy later?

These small changes don’t take much effort, but they’ll make the next couple of months feel calmer and a lot more manageable.

It’s so easy to feel overwhelmed in these last 3 months of the year, these practical tips will help ease the overwhelm.

Practical tips to make life easier.

1. Swap Spontaneous Snacks for Planned Pick-Me-Ups

Rather than grabbing snacks or drinks on the go (which add up quickly), keep a favourite ready-to-go option with you like a chocolate bar or sparkling water from a multi-pack. It costs less, saves you time queueing, and still gives you that “pick-me-up” moment without the overspend.

2. Swap endless social scrolling for a quick declutter.

It’s amazing how much time disappears when we’re scrolling. Instead of losing 20 minutes online, use that time to declutter just 10 items from your home – a drawer, a shelf or the “junk” corner that always builds up. Little by little, you’ll create breathing space now and avoid the frantic pre-Christmas tidy later.

3. Swap big unplanned weekly Shops for meal planning

Rather than doing a large, unfocused food shop each week, take a few minutes to plan your meals. It helps you buy only what you need, cut down on waste, and avoid the mid-week “what’s for dinner?” panic. The money saved can be redirected into your December budget, while the time saved eases everyday stress.

4. Swap “All at once” thinking for “Little and Often”

Instead of leaving everything for December – the cleaning, shopping, or prep tasks, start breaking things down into smaller chunks now. For example, wrap gifts as you buy them, or do 15 minutes of cleaning a few times a week rather than a big deep-clean in one go. The gradual approach means December won’t feel like one overwhelming marathon.

5. Swap “Last minute panic” for a simple notes list.

Instead of relying on memory (mines not great at the best of times) and then stressing in December when you forget something, start a running list now in your phone or notebook. Jot down gift ideas, food you’ll need or small tasks as they pop into your head. By the time December arrives, you’ll already have a plan – no more frantic dashes or overspending because you forgot what you needed.

Making little shifts.

Smart swaps aren’t about giving things up they’re about choosing differently so that you can feel more at ease. By making these little shifts now, you’re not just saving money or time; you’re creating space to enjoy December with more calm and control and much less overwhelm.

Confidence can feel like a mystery sometimes.

We think it’s something we’re either born with or that magically appears after a big success. But confidence isn’t just for public speakers, CEOs, or people with perfect morning routines.

Confidence is built bit by bit, moment by moment.
And it doesn’t require a life overhaul. Sometimes, all it takes is one small, intentional task to remind yourself:

“I’m capable. I’ve got this.”

A confidence boost.

So today, I want to share one simple thing you can do to give your confidence a quick and genuine boost:

Do One Thing You’ve Been Avoiding

That’s it.

Pick one tiny task you’ve been putting off—and do it.

Reply to that email you’ve been ignoring

Fold the laundry sitting in the corner

Make that appointment

Update your CV

Clean out one drawer

Cancel the subscription you keep forgetting about

It doesn’t have to be dramatic. It just needs to be something that’s been lingering on your mental to-do list for too long.

Why this works.

Avoidance is sneaky. Every time we delay or ignore something, our mind quietly records it as unfinished business. It weighs on us, even if we don’t realise it.

The more those little tasks pile up, the more powerless we start to feel.

But when you finally face just one of them?
You shift the story.

You go from:

“Ugh, I’m always behind…”
to
“Great, I did that!”

And that shift, however small is a confidence builder.

Momentum builds confidence.

Think of confidence like a muscle. You don’t wake up with six-pack abs. You build strength by showing up, doing reps, and proving to yourself that you can be consistent.

Doing one avoided task is like your first rep. It creates momentum.

And momentum says:

“I can trust myself to take action.”

“I keep my promises—even the small ones.”

“I don’t need to wait until I feel confident to act.”

You act, and the confidence follows.

Try this today:

Take 60 seconds.

Write down 3 small tasks you’ve been avoiding (even the silly ones).

Choose one. Do it within the next 15 minutes. No perfection, just completion.

Then pause, breathe, and notice how you feel. Even if it’s subtle, there will be a shift.

That’s the spark. That’s self-trust coming back online.

Final thoughts.

Confidence Isn’t Loud, It’s Quiet Self-Trust

You don’t need to climb a mountain or give a TED Talk to feel confident.
Sometimes, all it takes is a five-minute task you’ve been avoiding for five weeks.

And when you realise you’re capable of consistence, even in a small way,
you start believing in what else is possible.

Want more bite-sized ways to build real confidence?
Let’s chat. I help people build their confidence one small step at a time. Drop me a line and we can organise a free 30-minute taster session to see how I could help you.

There’s something quietly terrifying about change.

Whether it’s changing careers, getting healthy, ending a toxic relationship, or finally going after that dream you’ve been putting off for years—the first step always feels like the hardest.

Why? Because deep down, we’re waiting for a sign. For motivation to hit. For fear to disappear. For confidence to arrive, neatly packaged and labelled “Ready Now.”

But here’s the truth I’ve learned—as a coach, and as someone who is constantly working my own growth:

The first step toward change is deciding to move… even before you feel ready.

Change doesn’t start with a plan, it starts with a decision.

Most people think they need clarity before they can begin. But it’s often the other way around.

When you decide to take action, any action, clarity begins to show up. You don’t need a five-year plan. You don’t need to know exactly how it all works out. You just need to ask yourself one question:

“What’s one small thing I can do today to move closer to the life I want?”

That’s it. One baby step.

What is the baby step?

Maybe it’s:

Texting someone for support

Signing up for a class that intimidates you

De-cluttering your space to create mental clarity

Saying “no” for the first time in a long time

Admitting what you really want, even if it scares you

Baby steps. But bold ones.

Fear isn’t a reason to stop, its shows you you’re growing!

If you’re scared, good. That means you’re right at the edge of your comfort zone—the place where growth begins.

It’s normal to feel shaky when you’re stepping into something new. You’re shedding old habits, stories, and beliefs. You’re disrupting your “autopilot.” Of course it feels weird.

But fear doesn’t mean “don’t.” It often means “this matters.”

No step is too small—Just make a step.

Making consistent choices.

We tend to dismiss small actions because we’re obsessed with big results. But real change is a series of consistent, courageous choices.

You don’t have to transform your whole life overnight. You just need to prove to yourself, with action, that you’re not staying stuck anymore.

And from there, momentum builds.

On a personal note……

“You’re not lazy. You’re not lost. You’re just standing in front of your next chapter and that first step is all it takes to turn the page. So, take it. However imperfect, awkward, or messy it feels. Start. Begin. Move.

You don’t have to feel ready.

You just have to be willing.

If you are still stuck.

If you still feel stuck (and that is VERY normal) please do drop me a line, we can have a chat and I can talk to you about how coaching can help unstick you and then you WILL be able to take that baby step and make that change!

Life coaching is a tool that is often used to help support those who wish to make changes in their lives. Change can be scary; you know you need to do it but you’re not sure how.

Sometimes there are times in our lives where we know we need to do something different; we need to shake things up a bit, but we don’t know where or how to start.

I talk with many clients about all aspects of change and how we can put together a plan to facilitate it in the most productive (and least scary) way.

Areas of change.

These obviously vary from person to person, but the most common areas around change that come up with my clients are:

Appearance – Feeling like you need a change? Maybe something has happened to you recently and you want a different look or perhaps you’ve outgrown your current style and want a makeover?

Job – You might not have been happy for a while and feel like life is too short to remain somewhere where you’re no longer happy? Maybe it’s larger than that and you’re desperate to do something completely different?

Location – The children have flown the nest; you might have split up from a partner and want a change of house/home? Or perhaps you just fancy living somewhere else?

Relationship – You’re no longer in one or you’re looking for a new relationship and feel the time is now. Maybe you want to get out of the relationship you’re in and you’re ready for change?

All of these things can be major life changing events and – on the face of it – feel very scary but with the right help and support, change can be SO exciting.

Ask yourself these questions –

If I were to make this change, how could my life look?

If I make no changes, how will my life look?

What is the scariest factor in making this change?

By making this change, how will I benefit and what will be the positive impact on those around me?

What would be the most exciting part of making this change?

Change can be unpopular.

Change isn’t always embraced by those in our circles since it can alter the dynamics of our interactions. Nevertheless, that shouldn’t deter us. If you’re contemplating a significant shift in your life, there’s a valid reason behind it. It suggests an imbalance in your current situation, and you have every right to take steps to rectify that.

Find an objective sounding board.

This is where I step in. Life coaching provides you with an objective ally, someone who will cheer you on and offer support as you navigate potentially challenging decisions without passing judgment.

Go for it!

Why wouldn’t you? If you’re creating change for a positive impact on your life, you’re not purposefully out to hurt others – why would you not try something different? Maybe this change will be the making of you but you won’t know until you try!

A few weeks ago, my body clock was completely up the creek thanks to a combination of menopause, insomnia and a mind filled with one hundred and one things to do. I seemed to be waking around 4.30am and then, not surprisingly, crashing out at 9pm (sometimes even earlier). It led me to an interesting train of thought.

Our beliefs.

On many occasions I have talked and written about how our belief system works. The simplified version being that many of beliefs that we have as adults derive from our learnings as children, whether we learn them from parents, siblings, teachers or others. Often these beliefs are carried through into adulthood, even if they no longer serve us well or are no longer appropriate.

So, where am I going with this?

Well, as I lay in bed at 4am, trying to get back to sleep, my mind reverted to that of a child where I hadn’t been allowed to get up until it was the “right time”. This was usually between 6.30am and 7am, hence lying there feeling horribly anxious and this is what interested me.

At the wonderful age of 55, definitely an adult, living in my own home, I can write the rules. What a revelation!

What works well for you?

If I want to get up at 4.30am, make myself a cuppa, sit in the garden or even start some work – I can. It’s my house, my rules. The same goes for bedtime. If I want to go to bed early or incredibly late, who cares? It’s entirely up to me!

Isn’t it interesting that there are so many habits that we formed in our childhood that then limit us as we get older without even realising it? As grown-ups we can decide how we live and we can make up the rules to suit our lifestyles, making them work for us.

What other rules can we break or set in our homes?

If you want to eat pasta for breakfast, you can. It might not be the most nutritious but if that’s what you fancy, do it!

If having a bath at 4 o’clock in the afternoon is relaxing for you and you have the time, why not?

Don’t fancy roast dinner on Sunday? Rather have a family pizza and chill with the kids? Your house, your rules – you can!

If getting up really early to get some personal admin done suits you, embrace it. Enjoy the peace and quiet and motor through it.

Ditch the rule book.

What I’m saying is it’s time to ditch the rule book. Your home is your space, and as an adult, you get to create the system that works best for you and everyone who lives there. Who cares what anyone else thinks? Take a good look around. Are there things you could tweak to make life smoother? Maybe there are lingering childhood habits that just don’t fit your current needs. It’s time to throw away that old rule book and start creating your own new one that works better for the life you are living today.

We all crave more time. Yet, in our constant pursuit of more time, we often miss the precious slivers already available. We scramble and stress over what seems absent, oblivious to the small moments waiting to be repurposed. These “pockets of time,” as I call them, hold the key to unlocking the space we crave, if we only shift our focus and learn to see them.

What are pockets of time?

These are identified as short periods of time, 15 minutes here, 10 minutes there. Time between things we are doing, where we perhaps waste our valuable time.

It might be 10 minutes in the morning before the rest of the house wakes up. It might be 15 minutes at lunchtime once you’ve had some lunch. You get the gist.

How can we use these pockets?

Forget rigid schedules and military precision – self-care shouldn’t feel like a boot camp. But when we crave a breath, a moment to simply be, these hidden pockets of time become life rafts.

And honestly, let’s admit it, we all have them. Instead of mindlessly scrolling or aimless wandering, let’s claim these micro-moments for the nourishment we truly need.

Here are some examples.

Ten minutes in the morning thinking about your day ahead rather than looking at Instagram. Have a cuppa, take a breath and think about what you have to do that day.

Ten minutes at lunchtime. Eat your lunch and switch off by reading your book, listening to a podcast, focus on something different.

Ten minutes in the car waiting for someone. Again, read a book, make a quick call to a friend, send a voice note.

Ten minutes stretching your legs. Stride around the block, it doesn’t need to be a long walk. Focus on your surroundings and appreciate not having to talk or listen to anyone!

Ten minutes after work, especially if you work from home. Create a routine of shutting everything down and taking those minutes to take some deep breaths, jot a few notes for the next day and then change into non-work mode – and yes, that can include changing into something comfier.

Pockets of time are a valuable and underused resource. We just have to be mindful of where we can grab them. Use them to your advantage to take breathers within your day – just 10 minutes, it can make ALL the difference.

As I have mentioned many times (so many times, I’m worried about being boring) I am NOT a New Year’s resolution person and have never set goals for myself at the beginning of the new year.

I appreciate that we are not all the same but if you too shy away from new year resolutions but want to start the year with some sort of positivity, intentions could work for you instead.

What’s the difference between intentions and resolutions?

A goal – or resolution – is the object of a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result. We are usually looking for a specific result at the end of our journey i.e I want to get fitter this year, so I am going to go to the gym at least 3 times per week.

An intention is more generic – a thing intended, an aim or plan. i.e I am going to continue to work on my boundaries by taking a step back in certain situations.

These might not sound very different, but for me, intentions are more gentle. Intentions tend to be things I am already working on and want to continue learning about and improving. Unlike goals with defined finish lines, intentions are meant to guide us on a continuous journey. They shape our choices and actions without demanding a specific outcome.

How can we set intentions for the year ahead?

Rituals hold a special place in my heart when it comes to setting intentions. That might be writing down my intentions in my journal and then reading through them in a quiet space with a glass of wine or sharing them with my best friend, talking through what I’m working on – these small ceremonies imbue my goals with magic.

There doesn’t need to be accountability with intentions, not in the same way we do with goals. Intentions can be noted down and then reflected on throughout the year. I tend to only do this around September, and then again at the end of my year to see how I’m doing.

Some ideas for intentions.

I am going to protect my personal space more this year.

I am going to continue to avoid other people’s dramas – not my circus, not my monkeys.

I am going to look at ways to have more fun, more silliness in my year.

I am going to care less about what others think.

These are just a few examples and might help you think of what yours could be. Remember, this is all about YOU, this is about things that help you grow as a person, that nourish your soul, the things that top up the energy levels and make you feel good about yourself!

You’ll be surprised what a shift in mindset these can create – have fun with them and see how it shapes your year ahead.

Historically the New year is a time for planning the year ahead, many people (not me) spend a lot of time looking at what they wish to achieve in the forthcoming months.

I am NOT a New Year’s resolutions person, I never have been but I understand that it works well for lots of people, HOWEVER…..before we map out the expectations and goals for the year ahead, how often do we take time to reflect on the year that’s been?

This might be something that you do in December, it sounds like a good time to do it before the next year comes crashing in but who realistically makes time/has time in December to really look back at the previous year with any sort of intent?

Positive reflections.

So, how do we reflect on our year in a positive way at the same time making note of the things we have learned, the things we may not wish to carry forward, the things we want to keep on doing?

A list.

We love a list, or a mood board, or a mind map – something that you can physically look at.

Your reflections.

Take time to go through your year month by month and remind yourself of events, achievements and obstacles that you incurred. Make a note for each month.

Once you have pulled these things out of the memory banks, look at each thing individually and bullet point or even write a word or phrase that reminds you of what that event or happening brought you and taught you.

Some things you will feel are not worth noting or perhaps you want to acknowledge them and then move on without making notes – that’s also fine.

Having gone through all the months and identified the learnings, you can then chose to create a visual reminder of the year (your mind map, vision board etc.)

Now pick out the important lessons, the important achievements and this doesn’t have to be just yours but maybe your child’s or partners?

On a separate piece of paper or even in your phone, make a note of the things you want to carry into 2024.

These can be things like –

I want to spend more time with XXXX

Regular pilates classes make me feel great, I need to make the space for them.

Spending time with X is a real drain on my energy – manage better.

Planning my meals/food shopping is a game changer.

These notes are just for you, they are reminders of what works and what doesn’t work for YOU.

Taking the time to reflect on a past year will often trigger you to remember just how much you have achieved – what a great way to start a year!

How do you know when you are running on empty? How does it show up for you? Are you someone who feels exhausted, lethargic, unable to motivate yourself? Does your body react physically? Perhaps you go down with a stinking cold or worse?

I think it’s fair to say that many of us keep going even when we notice the tell-tale signs that are warning us that we are flagging, heading towards burnout.

Why do we all run on empty?

Many reasons. We feel we have to keep going. We don’t feel that there is anyone else to pick up the slack. Some of us feel that by keeping going we work our way through it and will eventually come out the other side but perhaps we need to monitor our energy more closely.

How much energy do you have?

If you were to visualise that symbol on our mobile phone that shows how much battery your phone has left and applied that to yourself right now, where would it show?

Are you half full? Are you nearly empty? Are you full to the brim?

Visualisation

Sometimes actually visualising how we feel by using an image like the battery symbol, makes it easier to acknowledge what’s going on for us right now. Another good one is a car fuel gauge – are you running on the reserve tank?

If your battery is nearly empty, how does that make you feel? What would you do if it were your phone? You’d plug it in and recharge it so that it works properly. Do you need re-charging?

Using the visualisation

When I am feeling a bit run down, a bit weary, I use this visualisation to work out how much energy I am running on and then I can decide where I put the energy that I do have. You can also picture a fuel gage on a car.

Where is my energy level now?

Does this top up my energy levels/refuel my tank? Or does it deplete my energy further?

If the task in question will deplete my energy further, I can then decide whether that task can wait for another day.

If it’s something that I’d usually love to do BUT will deplete my energy level, I can also decide that today I can instead practice some self-care and re-schedule.

Your energy is precious – be careful who you give it to.

My energy is precious and the only person that can protect it is me, so deciding where and when I put it – even with who I put it – helps me to keep balanced and not burn out. Better to see when the levels are getting low and do something about it than keep going and going until I fall over.

As the children go off to school or university, it’s not only a huge change for them but for parents too. Parents are often left feeling as though they’re grieving for ‘what has been’ and although they obviously haven’t actually lost their children, the sense of loss can feel very real and be overwhelming.

Feeling the loss

Parents I have worked with explain empty nest syndrome as a feeling of loss of purpose. Often it makes them question their role and what they’re actually needed for now their kids have flown the nest. This is perhaps magnified for those whose kids have physically gone off to university. Suddenly there is a gaping hole in their lives and they know their role as parent has significantly changed.

Remember -you will always be their mum or dad

The reality of the situation is that you will always be their mum or dad, whatever happens and wherever they go or whatever they do. Knowing that you are there – whether it be to deal with their tons of dirty washing or to rant and rage at you about the amount of course work/homework they have or just for a hug when they get dumped – they need you!

It’s time to re-focus

Dealing with this change involves re-focusing on your own life – what do you want to do for you aside from being a parent?

Some people choose to go back maybe taking on a full time rather than a part time role. There are others who increase their working hours and this can help, but it does depend on the individual. My clients who take the back to work leap often need help with confidence and refocusing on what they can do, can commit to do and most importantly, what they want to do.

How do I fill the gap?

For those whose kids have left for university, I often look at what physically needs to happen in the family home so that the gap created by one less body isn’t too painful.

The weekly shop: This can be a real shock to the system, but we can turn this into a positive action and form new habits e.g. “I won’t need to fill the cupboard with kids’ cereal/biscuits/crisps so that means I can finally start my healthy eating plan and not be tempted to snack on all their junk.”

Start an exercise class or evening class that you’ve wanted to do for ages. Now you are not having to be “the taxi” you can now put some energy into you.

Notice the times of day/evening that feel the most difficult. What is it you miss at that time? Try shaking up your routine, perhaps have dinner at a different time? Go for an evening walk when before you’d have been engrossed in family stuff. A change in routine will help shift the mindset.

Sometimes the space can feel overwhelming and we freeze. Even if you are feeling at your most tired, even if your motivation to do stuff has left you, keep busy. This added to a change in routine is a distraction technique that will move you forward.

Make a list of friends, family who you have been meaning to get in contact with and just haven’t had the chance to. It doesn’t have to be physical meet-up, it can be a phone call. Talking about other people’s stuff is a great way to distract ourselves and you might find you can make some plans to do something lovely.

Give them the wings to fly.

Remember, you are the parent bird – you have given them the wings to fly. You’ve pushed them gently out of the nest so that they can soar.

Concentrate not on how empty the nest feels now, but how you can create a peaceful, loving, safe environment for them when they come home and want to escape the chaos of university.

Well done!

Well done – you have created something quite wonderful and it’s your time now!
